Experiments

Five other ways the journal could have looked were declined when its structure was chosen. Each is built here as the Seam Theory section in that world, with the same concepts and objects and the same exact mathematics, so the directions can be judged on their own terms.

  1. 1

    Folding Sequence

    Origami crease-pattern diagrams

    Declined
Step-by-step folding suits one construction, not a journal of many entries.
    Kept
    Deep-linkable steps inside a plate’s own animation.
  2. 2

    Hand-drawn Zine

    Marker explainer comics

    Declined
Doodles and mascots undercut exact statements for a sceptical reader.
    Kept
Arrows that draw themselves in as their map is explained.
  3. 3

    Cutting Bench Rail

    Film editing select rails

    Declined
A scrubbing film rail replaces navigation with something a reader must learn.
    Kept
A mark where the reader stopped, restored on return.
  4. 4

    Generative Identity

    Parametric brand marks

    Declined
A reseeding identity contradicts a fixed print edition.
    Kept
Nothing beyond what the emblems already do.
  5. 5

    Cloud Quarry

    Surreal constructive worlds

    Declined
No relation to the program’s objects or its readers.
    Kept
    Nothing.
